Going out in a scorching hot sunny day, your skin will be damage, so does the interior of your car. If you wish to prevent your car's interior to age prematurely, we recommend you to install some tinted film on your car's windshield and windows, which can insulate heat, Infrared Radiation(IR) and Ultraviolet(UV) rays for getting into your car. But for most people, choosing an appropriate percentage or rate of insulation is always a common dilemma.
Today is your lucky day if you face the same dilemma, let me explain the different properties to lookout for in considering which percentage or rate of tinted film to choose from.
Infrared Radiation(IR) - IR resistance rate, indicates the percentage of IR the film can insulate, the higher the rate, the more IR the film can block out from sunlight.
*Therefore the film further blocks out heat, because IR and heat are directly correlated.
Ultraviolet(UV) - UV resistance rate, indicates the percentage of UV the film can insulate, the higher the rate, the more UV the film can block out from sunlight.
*This is not crucial nowadays, because most of the tinted film's insulation rate is at least 98% on the market.
Light Transparency(LT) - LT rate, indicates the percentage of sunlight that is allowed to pass through the film, the higher the rate, the more sunlight can pass through the film.
*Therefore, the higher the rate, also means better visibility while driving, because more lights make it brighter and easier the see.
**But this also means, more IR and heat can get in the car. So a balance ratio of IR rate and LT
rate film MUST BE considered. In light of the moderation ratio between IR rate and LT rate, usually the front parts of the car(windshield, driver window and front passenger window) will use a LT rate of 40%, because this will directly affect the driver's visibility.
As for the the rear parts of the car(rear passenger windows and rear window), if privacy is required, 15% or even 5% LT rate film can be use.
**BUT BE WARN !! According to Malaysian Land Transport Authority, the allowed LT rates are 70% for the front Windshield, 50 % for the driver's window and front passenger window, and 30% for the remaining rear passenger and rear windows. So if you do not plan on getting a traffic summon, following the regulations above is advised.
Remarks - Most and almost all tinted films are at least 98%, if not a 100% UV Resistant. Thanks to today's advance technologies, there is no need to specifically considering UV Resistant tinted films.
IN SUMMARY, the main source of heat is coming from sunlight, 53% from IR rays, 44% from Light rays, 3% from UV rays. So, for a tinted film to be efficient, it should block out visible lights and invisible lights(IR and UV), preventing these rays of lights from getting in the car. But with more light rays blocked out, visibility will be an issue, which is also a traffic safety issue. So to achieve moderation, tinting service shops recommend about 40% LT rate for windshield and front windows of the car, even though the driver will feel a little dim during the day, at least the driver do not feel the heat. As for the rear windows, LT rates can be around 30% or even 20% if privacy is wanted. The rear windows can be a little darker, because it does not directly affect the driver's visibility.
